 Fishing and Feeding Tales

The SWIT staff take the residents fishing

Tommy and Will (RHP House Directors) took the residents on two recent fishing trips to a local pond.  Both began at the early hour of 5:30 am, and were momentous events for the residents.

When asked about their fishing adventures, Haywood (House Manager) said:  “It was beautiful!  I hadn’t been fishing in 50 years.  Scottso’s grandson showed us how to use the rods and reels, and bait the hooks.    We all caught something.  I caught mine sorta accidentally, but in the end, we had enough for a “mess of fish”.  Carl cleaned and cooked our catch for us, and everyone had a great time.”

In John’s 21st chapter,- one of the post resurrection appearances,- the disciples had fished all night and had no luck.  Jesus appears on the shore and tells them to cast out on the other side.  When they do, they are overwhelmed with their catch.  Amazed, they come to the shore where Jesus has fish cooking over the coals, and they have breakfast together.  This amazing story of fishing pointed them (and us) to an awareness of God’s abundance and care for each one of of us.

At Reentry House Plus we find that the simple gifts of time together can open our residents to believe and trust that the good things in life are available to them as well.  And with that awareness they are helped to regain and build the confidence they need to face the many other challenges of their lives.

And Another Feeding Event

Above Chaplain Josh LeRoy (far right) Assists the Cooks from Yokefellows as they grill hot dogs and hamburgers for 250

The Yokefellows Tuesday night volunteers at OCC (Orange Correctional Center) hosted a July 4th hamburger and hot dog “picnic” for the residents and staff of the center.  It actually happened on July 11, and was a hit for both the volunteers and those at Orange Correctional Center (residents and staff), in total about 250 people.  Reentry House Plus provided the funds for the hamburgers, hot dogs and buns, and the other volunteers from Yokefellows, with the support of AOPM (Alamance/Orange Prison Ministry), provided the sides, watermelon and desserts. Plates of food were first taken to the men on solitary, and then the dorm resident groups were fed in sequence.

A big THANK YOU goes out to Ms. Cobb (Superintendent), Ms. Stevens (Reentry Coordinator), Ms. King (Program Office), Mr Rogers (Asst. Sup.) and all the officers and staff who helped arrange and coordinate the event.  In the end, “A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL.”

And THANK YOU, to our RHP Supporters, for providing the funds and energy that were catalytic in making all this happen.

And for the volunteers, the smiles and expressions of appreciation from the residents and staff spoke volumes.

Feeding examples in the Bible (manna in the wilderness, the feeding of the 5,000 in the New Testament) show that concrete experiences of care and provision that manifest something significant about the love of God - a love that can be healing and redemptive for all - staff, residents and volunteers.
